Director's Note
There's a moment in D.A. Pennebaker's groundbreaking documentary Don't Look Back where Bob Dylan warms up in the green room before taking the stage at Albert Hall. He strums his guitar. He clears his throat. He tries out several harmonicas. The tension in the room is palpable. His tour manager enters to say, "Two minutes, Bob."
Then there's a moment where Bob Dylan looks scared. In addition to being the world's greatest songwriter, Bob Dylan is, I believe, 10-feet tall and breathes fire. There should be nothing in the universe that scares this man. Yet the thought of going on stage and doing what he loves to do appeared to terrify him in that brief moment.
A creative career is comprised of thousands of these moments. An artist is merely a person who has found the right method and the strength to move past them to take the stage, to paint the canvas, to pick up the guitar, to chisel the marble block, or hell, even to write the screenplay.
